Help your Parents Make the Right Choice for Their Future

If your parents are starting to need more support as they head into old age, there are many options to consider depending on their needs – from getting help in their own home to supported retirement living or full-time care in a nursing home.

Remaining at home

Many older adults are, understandably, keen to remain in their own homes for as long as they can, and this can be managed with a little extra support, either from family and friends or with help from outside agencies.

If this is an option for your parents, look into arranging in-home care givers, cleaning, and meal delivery. Contact Age UK for help and advice and consider simple modifications to make the home safer – perhaps replace a bath with a walk-in shower, install grab rails in the bathroom and on any outside steps, and think about a wheelchair ramp or stairlift.

Medical alert systems will also provide help at the touch of a button if your parent falls and is unable to get up.

Independent retirement living

Some older adults may find living at home is becoming increasingly difficult but aren’t ready to make the move into a care home.

There are several options available to them, from a room in a retirement home or a retirement apartment or house, to a retirement village or even a luxury property in the grounds of a stately home, with a daily four-course lunch and all household chores catered for.

Retirement villages and luxury independent living generally offer a range of accommodation including apartments, bungalows and cottages. There may also be some options to rent rather than buy, depending on the provider.

Independent retirement living works perfectly for older adults who still lead an active life but don’t want to worry about daily chores, cooking or gardening. This kind of living is usually very sociable, with communities of like-minded people given the opportunity to eat together and enjoy varied activities.

Sheltered housing

Sheltered housing sites generally consist of a number of apartments or houses managed by a warden living on the premises, with the addition of a 24-hour emergency alarm.

Residential care home

Residential homes will provide help with washing, dressing, taking medicines and going to the toilet. This kind of home will have a staff of trained care assistants providing different levels of 24-hour care, depending on need.

Nursing home

If your parents require some element of nursing care – from dressing wounds to intravenous medication – 24-hour nursing care should be considered. A team of registered nurses supported by care assistants will provide round-the-clock care. A social worker, registered nurse or doctor will be able to advise you on whether or not your parents would be better to choose a residential care or nursing home.

Dementia care

A person with dementia will need more care and support as their symptoms get worse over time. Before confirming with a residential care home or nursing home, confirm they will support people with dementia. Many will offer bespoke dementia care packages.

Helping your parents plan for their future may seem overwhelming now, but looking at the basics in a methodical way will help you narrow the list to a couple of options to investigate further – and help you find what will work best for them.
