Top Tips for DIY Novices

Throughout lockdown, people have viewed not being able to leave their homes or go to work as the perfect time to start looking into picking up a new hobby. Some chose reading, others cooking, and a lot of people decided to give their home a new look by trying their hand at DIY. Of course, when you first start doing this, it can be quite overwhelming. As such, the below list of top tips for DIY novices has been put together so you can dip your toe in the water before fully submerging yourself.

Research Beforehand

This can come in a variety of different ways. You can take to Google and look up information surrounding the specific task you plan on undertaking, you can also head to your nearest DIY store and ask people questions in person, or you can contact a relative who you know has DIY experience. Whatever it is, make sure you set time aside to properly look into the task so that it isn’t too overwhelming when you actually go for it.

You should also take the time to sit down and work out what tools you will need. There is nothing worse than settling in to a project and realizing you don’t have all of the necessary equipment, so be sure to take a moment and work out what is required and what you already have.

Start Slow

Don’t take on a huge project at first. Even if it doesn’t go wrong, you won’t be doing it to the desired standard, and so it makes a lot of sense to start by having your first task as something quite simple. Try painting, putting up a fence, or assembling some furniture. Once you feel more confident with your handy work, then it’s time to take on some of the bigger projects. Again, though, be sure to do some research and know exactly what you’re getting into before you begin.

Always Think About Your Safety

One of the most paramount things you need to consider is your safety. Ensure that the tools you are using are up to a suitable standard, you always have high-quality protective gear, and help on hand (or not far away) should you ever need it. Unless you’re building an extension on a hospital, the last thing you want is for your first DIY project to end in A&E.

Consider the Products You Are Using

You should always research the different products that you’re using because they can have an impact on the end result. For example, when considering whether to use mineral oil vs pure tung oil, a lot of people will opt for pure tung due to the fact that it’s much quicker drying.

Finish What You Start

There is nothing worse than having a house filled with half-finished DIY projects. It’s unsightly to look at and is also frustrating for you as the person who has started the project. Make sure that when you decide to take on a DIY task, you do it because there is nothing worse than starting something and not finishing it.
