5 Things to Consider Before Getting Dental Implants

Thinking of getting dental implants? The false teeth would improve your smile and help you chew better. However, there are a couple of things to consider beforehand. Let’s talk about them.

Budget

How much of a budget do you have? Dental implants are not cheap. Most of the time, they would cost $800- 6000 per tooth. As you can imagine, your dentist’s experience would affect how much you would have to spend too.

Do you have dental insurance? It would cover your implants’ cost.

Doctor Experience

Let’s talk about your doctor’s experience again. Find a dentist that has been practicing for many years. Look online. You would be able to find which dentists are the best where you live. Of course, check your doctor’s qualifications and licensing too.

You need to find a dentist that’s trustworthy. Although you might think you would need an implant, your dental surgeon might not. If he’s trustworthy, he would advise you to not get the false tooth, as you would be wasting your cash.

Large, reputed dental clinics are a one stop dental office for the whole family, and they would provide the best service. Always go to them.

Enough Bone

Usually, a dental implant sits on top of your jaw. The thing is, your jawbone may not be strong enough for an implant to latch onto. You would have to do a jaw x-ray to find out how healthy your jawbone is.

Procedure

If you want to learn more about dental implants, know that there are three ways a dental surgeon could place them. They are the endosteal, subperiosteal, and zygomatic methods. All three of them have their own pros and cons.

During the endosteal method, a placeholder is installed into your jaw-bone. It would be screw-like in shape, and your false tooth would sit on it. If you opt for this method, the healing time would be 4-6 months.

The subperiosteal method places the implant on top of your bone. A metal frame would be placed right underneath your gums, and your false tooth would be attached to it. The max healing time would be 3 months.

If you opt for the zygomatic method, your implant would be set into your cheekbone. The max healing time would be around 2-4 months.

Know the Risks

The risks of getting dental implants are rare. However, complications can occur. Thankfully, it’s not hard to fix most of the complications that might arise.

One of the most common risks of getting a dental implant is infection. A lot of the time, infections occur when your dental surgeon does not sanitize your mouth properly during the procedure. An infection can also occur if you don’t maintain proper oral hygiene afterwards.

A rarer complication would be you having an allergic reaction to your false tooth.

Before you get a dental implant, there are many things to consider. Probably the most important would be to find the right dentist. The doctor you’re seeing should be experienced. You can see how great he is by looking through reviews online. Of course, consider the cost of the procedure as well.
